Picking your site, the call that shapes everything else
A good backcountry site checks several boxes at once, never just one. Being near water matters, but not too near: a flash flood after a storm can turn a nice riverside spot into a real hazard overnight. Flat ground stops a night spent sliding to the bottom of the tent, and no dead tree overhead removes a genuine risk, a branch giving way in the wind while everyone’s asleep.
Facing away from the prevailing wind changes the whole comfort level of a multi-day setup too. Even mild shelter from the slope cuts heat loss at night and makes pitching a tarp or tent far more stable than out in open wind.
Water, the first real constraint of self-sufficiency
Over several days, water doesn’t get carried in bulk, it gets found and treated on site. Scouting potential sources on a map before leaving changes the whole weight calculation: fewer kilos of water sitting in the pack at the start. Feeding yourself for days with no resupply
The math runs on daily caloric intake. Sustained physical effort outdoors easily demands over 2,500 to 3,000 kcal a day, well above what a desk job burns in the same time. Freeze-dried meals cover that need well for their weight, as long as there’s a way to rehydrate them with hot water, which loops straight back to having fuel to heat that water in the first place.
Building in at least one extra day of food beyond the planned length absorbs a weather delay or a rough patch of terrain, without turning a simple setback into a real food emergency.
Staying warm, night after night
The full sleep system, tent or tarp, sleeping bag, and insulated pad, gets chosen as a set, never piece by piece in isolation. A high-performing sleeping bag laid straight on the ground loses a big chunk of its effectiveness. The pad isn’t a comfort add-on, it’s what cuts the thermal bridge with ground that’s often far colder than the surrounding air. Power, the piece everyone forgets first
Headlamp, GPS, phone left in airplane mode to save battery: over several days, power runs out faster than most people expect. A power bank charged to full before leaving already covers a good chunk of the need for a three to four day trip. Leaving the site the way you found it
Full self-sufficiency includes what gets carried back out, as much as what gets carried in. Every piece of waste, including biodegradable scraps like food peels, goes into a dedicated bag rather than getting buried or left behind: decomposition in a forest often takes far longer than people assume, and local wildlife quickly learns to dig through human leftovers, a problem that outlasts any single trip. A well-chosen, well-left site is also what lets someone else find that same spot untouched next year.
