Filtering and purifying, two different steps
The two words get mixed up constantly even though they cover different ground. Filtering physically blocks particles too large to pass through a membrane: bacteria, protozoa like giardia, sediment. Purifying goes a step further and neutralizes viruses too, far smaller than bacteria, which a standard filter simply lets through.
In most temperate backcountry settings, the viral risk in a natural source stays low compared to areas where water crosses paths with a lot of human population. But the moment a stream runs downstream of grazing land, a campground, or a village, the calculus shifts: a filter alone stops being enough, and a purification step needs to go on top of it.
Hollow fiber filters, the portable standard
Hollow fiber technology runs most portable filters on the market today, from squeeze models to filter straws. Water passes through a bundle of microscopic tubes lined with pores, typically 0.1 to 0.4 microns in absolute diameter. At that size, bacteria and protozoan cysts (giardia, cryptosporidium) stay trapped on the dirty side.
Viruses, on the other hand, often measure under 0.1 microns, plenty small enough to pass straight through that kind of filter. Finer filters exist, called ultrafilters, rated around 0.01 microns and capable of blocking viruses too, but they cost more, need more pressure to push water through, and run noticeably slower. For freshwater use in mountain or forest terrain in most of Western Europe or North America, a standard 0.1 to 0.4 micron filter covers the actual risk.

Boiling, the method that lets nothing through
No filter, however fine, does what heat does: boiling destroys bacteria, parasites, and viruses alike, with no exception and no technical gap. The benchmark set by the CDC is simple: one minute at a rolling boil below 2000 meters (6,562 ft) in altitude, three minutes above that.
The reason for that difference comes down to physics: boiling temperature drops with altitude as the air gets thinner. But even at 4,877 meters, water still boils at 84°C (182°F), a temperature more than sufficient to kill intestinal pathogens within minutes. The only real cost of this method is fuel and time. Reliability, on the other hand, stays total.
Chemical tablets, a useful backup
Iodine tablets typically disinfect a liter of water in thirty minutes with two tablets, but iodine doesn’t reliably beat cryptosporidium at any dose practical to carry in the field, that particular parasite shrugs it off almost regardless of concentration. Chlorine dioxide tablets do better on that specific front: they kill giardia outright and are partially effective against cryptosporidium, at the cost of a contact time that can stretch to four hours for that parasite alone.
Two adjustments matter before relying on either. Cold water, below 5°C (41°F), slows the chemical reaction significantly: try to warm the water and extend the contact time listed on the packaging. Murky water neutralizes part of the disinfectant before it even reaches the microorganisms: double the tablet dose in that case.
Dealing with murky or near-freezing water
Water loaded with particles creates a double problem. It clogs a filter far faster than clear water, and it cuts the effectiveness of a chemical tablet by soaking up part of the active ingredient. The right sequence is letting the water settle in a container before treating it, giving the heaviest particles time to sink, then filtering or treating only the clear layer on top.
On near-freezing water from a snowmelt stream or a mountain creek, boiling stays the method that needs the least adjustment: temperature plays no role once water hits a rolling boil, unlike a chemical tablet that loses effectiveness in the cold.
Mistakes that make a good filter useless
A hollow fiber filter that freezes even one night with water still inside it almost always cracks, often with no visible sign. The filter keeps producing water at a normal rate, but what comes out is no longer filtered at all, it runs through the cracks instead of the pores. In cold conditions, empty the filter and keep it warm, against the body or inside a sleeping bag, never in an outer pocket.
A second common mistake is letting a filter clog gradually without backflushing it. Most modern filters clean out by reversing the flow with a syringe or squeeze bulb included in the box, a step plenty of people skip or forget until flow drops too low to be useful in the field.
The most reliable method in the field
The strongest combination is a hollow fiber filter for everyday use, chemical tablets as a backup if the filter breaks or clogs, and boiling as the absolute last resort if nothing else is available. No single method covers every scenario on its own, but all three together close nearly every gap.
