Water boils at a lower temperature at altitude, around 90°C (194°F) at 3000 meters versus 100°C (212°F) at sea level, which slightly reduces thermal disinfection effectiveness for the same duration. The CDC recommends extending the boil to three minutes above 2000 meters of elevation, a safety margin that offsets that temperature drop without complicating the method.

The SODIS (Solar Water Disinfection) method, developed by the Swiss institute Eawag and promoted by the WHO for areas without access to safe drinking water, involves filling a clear PET plastic bottle and leaving it in direct sunlight for at least six hours, or two full days under very cloudy conditions. UV-A rays combined with heat gradually destroy the pathogens present, a method that requires strictly no equipment beyond a clear bottle and sunlight.
This method stays the slowest and least reliable of the comparison, best reserved for situations where no other option is available: no fire, no tablets, no UV device.
