A spot on high ground, well clear of the high-tide line, protects against both prevailing wind and an unexpected rise in water, two risks that stack up easily on a beach that looks perfectly calm at the moment of settling in. Checking the wrack line, that band of debris (seaweed, driftwood) left by the last high tide, clearly shows how far water has risen recently, a reliable marker for picking a campsite above that limit.


Finding direction without a compass by the sea

The coastline itself remains the most reliable reference with no compass on hand: following it without ever straying inland guarantees reaching a point of civilization, in one direction or the other, rather than cutting through unfamiliar interior terrain. The sun rises roughly east and sets roughly west, a rough but useful reference for holding a general heading with no other tool, especially on a coast running north-south where that perpendicular direction points straight inland.

Freshwater, the real scarcity

Drinking seawater stays the most dangerous and most tempting mistake facing intense thirst. The mechanism is purely chemical: the body can never produce urine saltier than blood, yet seawater carries roughly three times more salt than human blood does. To clear that excess salt, kidneys have to produce about 1.2 liters of urine for every liter of seawater swallowed, a net loss of 200 ml of water per glass drunk: drinking seawater actively dehydrates rather than quenching thirst.

Freshwater is rarely found right on the beach: it usually takes heading inland to find a stream, a river, or standing water worth filtering. Morning dew, collected with cloth left out overnight, and rain caught on a tarp rigged as a funnel round out supplies while searching for a real source.


Fishing and shellfish, the precautions to know

Shellfish, crustaceans, and fish cover most food needs along a coast, with improvised fishhooks made from bones or fish spines. Caution still applies: some crabs pinch hard at bare toes in rocky zones, and any shellfish with a suspicious smell or one already open before cooking should never be eaten, since the toxin stays active even after full cooking.


A shelter away from wind and tides

A light branch tipi covered with foliage or dried seaweed goes up quickly with whatever’s on hand and blocks the prevailing wind effectively. A shallow rock overhang, visible and lit from outside, works just as well as it does inland, with the same rule as a real cave: if daylight no longer reaches the back of the shelter, it’s worth checking the tide before settling in for the night rather than risking getting trapped by rising water.


Nighttime cold, a threat unique to the coast

The swing between day and night temperature runs sharper on the coast than further inland, with ambient humidity and wind that almost never fully dies down speeding up heat loss once the sun goes down. Sand that felt scorching in the mid-afternoon cools fast after sunset, holding onto none of the day’s heat the way rock does. Insulating against the ground with dry vegetation, dried seaweed, or whatever’s on hand matters just as much as covering up, since most nighttime heat loss comes from direct contact with ground that’s already turned cold.


Rest and energy management

Sun glare off the water adds exposure on top of what comes straight from the sky, a heat stress that’s easy to underestimate as long as natural shade stays scarce on an open coast. The same habits that apply to extreme heat apply here: avoid intense physical effort during the most exposed hours, cover skin rather than exposing it directly, and save energy rather than burning it exploring ground already familiar.

An isolated coastline often sits outside regular cell coverage: a satellite SOS beacon makes it possible to transmit an exact position to rescuers even in that situation, a real plus for any trip into a quiet coastal area.
