That shift takes time: 30 to 45 minutes in complete darkness to reach near-peak sensitivity, with sensitivity already multiplied by 10,000 within the first thirty minutes.

Sitting still for a few minutes in the dark before setting off, rather than switching the headlamp on right away, lets that process get underway without interrupting it on the very first step.


Why red light changes everything

The rods in your eyes barely detect red light at all, which lets you light your way a little without erasing dark adaptation already gained. White light, on the other hand, resets that process within a fraction of a second, no matter how much time you’d already spent in the dark beforehand.
