If you can fix or rig something with it, that’s good gear. A rope you can’t actually tie properly is just dead weight in the pack. Five survival knots cover nearly every real need in bivouac use: the clove hitch, the figure eight, the prusik, the bowline, and knowing how to spot a bad knot before it fails at the worst possible moment.


These knots and rope skills change everything out there

A knot makes the whole difference between a tarp that holds through a windy night and one that collapses at 3 a.m., between a load hanging safely and a pack hitting the ground, between a fixed line that actually holds and one that slips at the worst moment. Knowing them cold, in the dark, with numb fingers, is something you drill at home, calmly, well before the day you actually need it, until your fingers know the move without your brain having to think about it.


The clove hitch, quick fixing without thinking twice

The clove hitch is still the fastest knot for securing a rope around a post, a tree, or a tent stake. It holds well under steady tension in one direction, but it has a weakness worth knowing: it can slip if the tension changes direction or drops out in jolts, which makes it great for tensioning a tarp or tying something down temporarily, less suited to a load that needs to hold safely unattended.

The figure eight, safety first

The figure eight makes a fixed loop at the end of a rope, used in climbing as a primary anchor point for good reason: it’s easy to check visually (its figure-eight shape immediately reads wrong if tied badly), it doesn’t slip under load, and unlike a lot of other knots, it stays relatively easy to untie even after holding real weight. This is the knot to reach for the moment a life or something genuinely precious depends on how solid the tie-off is.


The prusik, tensioning a tarp or climbing a fixed line

The prusik is a self-locking knot: tied from a small loop of cord around a thicker main rope, it slides freely when pushed by hand, but locks instantly the moment a load pulls on it. It’s the knot that lets you climb a fixed rope by alternating your weight between two prusiks, or tension a tarp with a simple pulley-style setup, adjusting tension without having to redo the whole thing every time.


The bowline, tying in safely

The bowline makes a fixed loop that never tightens down on whatever it’s wrapped around, which makes it the reference knot for tying yourself into a safety line, hoisting a person, or forming a stable loop around a tree trunk without risking choking or cutting into it. Unlike the clove hitch, it stays stable even when tension varies or drops out at times, which makes it far more reliable for anything involving personal safety.


The sheet bend, joining two ropes of different thickness

The sheet bend exists specifically to join two ropes that aren’t the same diameter, a situation that comes up more often than you’d expect out there: a thin cord that needs extending with a thicker main rope, or two different rope ends pulled from the pack when the available length falls short. The thinner rope wraps around the loop formed by the thicker one, which distributes tension in a way that holds even across a wide diameter gap, where a simple square knot would slip or snap.


Picking the right rope before you even tie a knot

A perfectly tied knot on the wrong rope is still dangerous. Static rope (minimal stretch) works for tensioning a tarp, hoisting a load, or securing a fixed point, exactly the common bivouac uses. Dynamic rope (built to stretch and absorb a shock, like climbing rope) is meant to cushion a fall, a far more specific use that doesn’t apply to most camp needs. For general bivouac use, a 4-6 mm technical cord (paracord-style) covers most light tasks, while genuine 8-10 mm rope is still needed the moment a heavier load or real personal safety is involved.


The mistakes that turn a knot dangerous

A poorly cinched knot slowly slips under load, sometimes over several hours, until it lets go all at once at the worst moment. Using a knot outside the job it’s built for (a clove hitch where a bowline belongs, for instance) creates the exact same risk. Another classic mistake: never testing a knot before trusting it. Before hanging a load or tying into a rope, pull on it as hard as you can by hand, safely, to confirm it actually holds before relying on it for real. A knot isn’t something you learn the night you need it. You drill it a hundred times before, until your fingers know it without asking your brain first.
