The idea to shelter in a cave is reassuring: a cave blocks wind and rain, a ready-made shelter when the weather turns. On the ground, a real, deep cave actually stacks up several genuine dangers, from permanent damp cold to sudden flooding, that make it one of the worst emergency shelter choices rather than an easy fix.

Cold and humidity, the first false good idea

A cave holds an almost constant temperature year-round, typically 10 to 12°C at low elevation, closer to 4 to 6°C at altitude, which sounds almost comfortable compared to freezing air outside. The real problem is humidity, often near 98 to 100% in underground galleries. As covered in our article on hypothermia and cold in the mountains, fighting moisture means fighting cold: a body sitting still all night in that humidity loses heat far faster than it would in the open air under a dry shelter, even at a lower displayed temperature. Stillness makes it worse: unlike walking, which produces heat continuously, a night spent sitting or lying in a cave lets the body cool with nothing offsetting the ambient moisture.


Collapse risk and rockfall

A cave’s structure is never fixed. The least stable galleries shift with freeze-thaw cycles, erosion, and water infiltration, and rockfall stays common in the least consolidated zones, often with no warning beforehand. Settling in for the night under an unfamiliar overhang, without ever assessing the stability of the rock above, means sleeping under a threat impossible to judge in the dark. A floor littered with recent, sharp-edged, unweathered debris is the clearest visible sign of regular rockfall activity at that exact spot.

Sudden flooding, a danger you don’t see coming

Rain falling far from a cave’s entrance can run off and fill a low gallery within minutes, turning a dry passage into a flooded trap with no warning sign visible from inside. The risk climbs sharply in cavities sitting downstream of a watershed, even when it isn’t raining directly above the entrance. It’s a danger professional caving takes very seriously, with strict protocols before any entry, a level of caution largely missing from the “duck into the first hole I find” instinct in an emergency.


The wildlife that’s already moved in

A cave rarely sits empty. Bats hibernate there under specific conditions, and most species found in France are legally protected: disturbing them during hibernation forces them to burn energy reserves they need to survive winter, a disturbance that can be fatal on top of being illegal. Other animals (foxes, badgers) may also have denned near the entrance or in the first galleries, defending that territory actively against any surprise intrusion. In France, many known cave systems are also under seasonal access restrictions specifically during bat hibernation season, a signal worth taking seriously rather than an administrative sign to ignore.


Getting lost in a network deeper than it looks

What looks like a simple entrance chamber can stretch on for dozens, sometimes hundreds of meters of side galleries invisible from the opening. Without a reliable light, a map of the system, or caving experience, venturing past the zone still lit by daylight sharply raises the risk of getting lost somewhere the usual sense of direction stops working entirely.

A few minutes of observation before settling in heads off most bad surprises. Checking the ground near the entrance for tracks (droppings, feathers, gnawed bones) reveals whether an animal already claims the spot. Listening for dripping or running water deeper in signals active moisture rather than a dry cavity. Checking whether daylight reaches the back wall gives a real read on depth without having to go in. And catching a strong ammonia smell, typical of a bat colony or an active den, should be enough to turn back immediately rather than investigate further in the dark.


The rock overhang, the real safe alternative

The distinction matters: a rock overhang, a shallow ledge that stays visible and lit from outside at all times, has nothing to do with a real cave. This kind of shelter blocks wind and direct rain without the risks of standing humidity, deep collapse, or sudden flooding that come with an enclosed cavity. The simple rule to remember: if daylight no longer reaches the back of the shelter, it’s no longer an overhang, it’s a cave, and the risk calculation changes completely.


Building an improvised shelter stays the safer call

In the vast majority of emergencies, putting up an improvised shelter with whatever’s on hand stays safer and faster to secure than an unknown cavity explored under pressure and in the dark. A tarp pitched against the wind, a sheet rigged between two trees, or a simple lean-to of branches covers the immediate need without any of the risks tied to an enclosed cavity. That kind of build is worth preparing well before hitting the trail, as part of real survival basics training (water, fire, shelter, food).

For preparation that avoids the situation entirely, a reliable ultralight tent remains the safer call before ever setting out, rather than counting on finding a natural shelter at the last minute.
