Site choice, before the tarp even comes out

Three things get checked before the first stake goes in. No dead tree nearby, standing or leaning, and no large dead branch still caught in the canopy above the chosen spot: the risk of it coming down in the wind overnight is nothing theoretical. Clear enough vegetation around the site avoids fighting brambles or saplings while pitching a tarp properly. And spotting dry wood within easy reach before settling in saves an extra trip once it’s dark.


Pitching a tarp between two trees, the base technique

Two trees spaced roughly 3.5 to 4 meters apart, a distance measured directly with an arm span rather than a tape measure, form the simplest structure to pitch. The tarp (a lightweight waterproof sheet) gets tensioned between them with cordage, leaving enough of an angle for rain to run off rather than pool into a sagging pocket.

Two pitching tricks that make a real difference in the field: prepping a loop with a stick slid through it at each anchor point lets the whole setup come down in one motion, instead of fighting a knot that’s swollen with moisture. The prusik knot (a sliding knot that locks under tension and releases by hand) stays the best option for tensioning a tarp with carabiners, with fine adjustment possible without redoing the whole thing.

What actually protects from cold is the ground

The ground pulls heat from the body far faster than the surrounding air, even on a night that would feel mild in daylight. A bed of dry branches and leaves packed between the ground and the body changes everything, before the thickness of the tarp overhead even factors in. This step often gets tackled after the shelter goes up in the usual order of priorities, when it should almost come first.


The small details that change everything

If a fire is lit inside or right at the entrance of the shelter, a vent opening at the top prevents smoke buildup, a real carbon monoxide risk in a semi-enclosed space. A foil emergency blanket stays protected rolled tight “like a piece of candy” rather than left flat, since its extreme fragility doesn’t forgive a single snag, and it always goes on the side sheltered from the wind rather than facing it.

One last simple habit worth building: hang a pack from a carabiner rather than leaving it on the ground, a move that protects the contents from morning damp as much as from an unwanted nighttime visitor.
